So, the radios that say 32 mile range are crap... Best to get some ham radios that operate with tons of stations?

Yes - I have those radios. They're missing a decimal point. They're ".32 mile" radios...

Check out Bao Feng radios. I use them for hunting. In the woods they work great . Since I live in the country IDK what the range would be like in a City setting.

I also have the extended range antennas. IIRC the extra antennas were less than $10 each.

Those were the very kind of radio my posted fleabay auction referenced. We used 'em out at Wellsville four-wheeling a few weeks ago - the club used them at Doe Valley near Johnstown a few weeks before that. They worked perfectly, came through loud & clear, and worked at least 5 miles apart, over varying terrains. Although I'm here IN the urban cessmaze, I haven't tried 'em here. I suspect they will carry THROUGH buildings and such with relative ease. Thing is, if the zombie outbreak is in full swing, the urban cessmaze is the LAST place you'll want to be!!!

The biggest issue you'll have with two way radios and CBs is OPSEC. These radios are all over the place and anyone can pick up your transmission if they are in range. If they are in range then you have issues. As any of us know the real danger in any catastrophe situation will be from living thinking humans. I recall my wife and I really pissing off the security in different amusement parks while using two ways to keep in touch.

I was looking through different distributors to see what is available out there. Most things available for common retail is similar to the radio shown earlier.

In order to have private communication a radio set up with encryption would be best. Pilfering police stations and patrol cars once Society is done might score the equipment needed. Most patrol cars are now equipped with repeaters that can be rigged for regional use. There would be a lot of dead space though. These units don't need a lot of electricity to work so a solar set up would work.

LONGER term, especially during something nefarious, OPSEC will be an issue, but even then - if you know the code words ahead of time ("The chair is against the wall" - "John has a long mustache" ), that may be more important than they type of radio or bandwidth you're using.
